At Primary level Key Stages 1 and 2, and at Secondary level Key Stage 3 our tutors teach English and Maths. Tutors in Scotland teach core Basic Skills English and Maths in line with the Scottish Curriculum.
A Basic Skills tutor offers one-to-one support in all aspects of Primary and Key Stage 3 English and Maths.
- English tuition includes spelling, punctuation and grammar, reading and writing.
- Maths tuition includes numbers, shapes and movement, measurement and data.
Functional Skills.
Our tutors offer one-to-one support in Functional Skills which are a key part of the National Curriculum in England, and are designed to give learners the skills they need to function effectively in life and work. They are practical skills in English, Mathematics and ICT that are essential for learning, work and life in general.
Functional Skills are typically assessed at Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. The level of assessment corresponds to the difficulty of the skills being tested.
- Entry Level functional skills are designed for learners who are just starting to develop their skills in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. These skills are typically assessed at Entry Level 3, Entry Level 2, or Entry Level 1.
- Level 1 functional skills are designed for learners who have a basic level of literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. These skills are typically assessed at Level 1.
- Level 2 functional skills are designed for learners who have a more advanced level of literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. These skills are typically assessed at Level 2.
- Level 3 functional skills are the most advanced level and are equivalent to a grade C or above at GCSE. They demonstrate that a learner has the skills and knowledge to use these subjects effectively in a range of contexts.
- In English, Level 3 functional skills cover a range of language and literacy skills, including reading, writing, speaking and listening, and the use of language in different contexts.
- In Mathematics, Level 3 functional skills involve the application of mathematical concepts and techniques to solve problems in a range of contexts.
- In ICT, Level 3 functional skills involve the use of technology to solve problems, create and communicate information, and work effectively with others.
Functional Skills are assessed through practical tasks and activities, rather than through traditional exams. They are an important part of many further education and vocational courses, and are also valued by employers as they demonstrate a person’s ability to apply their skills in a practical setting.
